Biometric Emphasizes Child Care Centers' Concern for Safety

CAMPBELL, CALIF. - November 26, 2007 - Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies today announced that Tutor Time Child Care / Learning Centers in Plantation and Pembrook Pines, Fla. have installed Schlage FingerKey DX biometric fingerprint scanners to provide a higher level of safety for the children. The biometric security system requires a fingerprint and pin number to verify that only authorized people can enter the center.

"The safety and security of our students and staff has always been the most important factor at our centers," said Renee Johnson, district manager for Tutor Time. "Installing biometric technology was simply a natural progression for us and we're glad that we can offer our parents a little added comfort when they leave their most cherished possession - their child - in our care."

To enroll families in the biometric system, Tutor Time has parents scan their fingerprint. The fingerprint is then converted into a series of numbers - similar to a bar code - so that the center is not maintaining a database of actual fingerprints. This template is then stored in the biometric unit.

When a parent comes into the center, they use the keypad to enter their own specific PIN number, similar to using an ATM at a bank. Then, they place their finger on the FingerKey DX sensor. This calls up the template stored in the FingerKey DX. Upon a match, the biometric unit instructs the door to unlock.

"From custody disputes to people just walking in off the streets, school officials must consider security paramount," emphasizes Jon Mooney, Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies general manager, Schlage biometrics. "While keys and cards are difficult to secure and manage, schools are also learning that they cannot take the chance of having a single code getting compromised, whether from ex-spouses, former employees, or a simple lost card or key. That's why so many schools, from pre-school through university, are using our finger scan and hand geometry readers to restrict access to their facilities."

The Schlage FingerKey DX family of biometric access control readers provides low-cost biometric alternatives designed to secure smaller user populations. The FingerKey DX includes a keypad and LCD display. Expanded memory and Ethernet options are also available. Verification takes less than two seconds. The user simply enters a PIN code or presents a card, which calls up a template to scan or pulls the template from a smartcard. Then, the user places a finger on the FingerKey reader for verification of the template. The variety of options provided by Schlage biometric readers creates an extremely flexible combination of solutions for most applications.
