California Baptist University Learns:
Schlage CM Locks Provide Real Protection

Computer-Managed Locks Limit Access to Computer Labs,
Bookstore, Game Room

FORESTVILLE, CONN. - January 6, 2005 - IR Security & Safety Electronic Control Systems today announced that California Baptist University is using Schlage computer-managed (CM) locking systems to secure several computer labs, the campus bookstore, and a game room. The 82-acre Riverside, Calif. campus serves nearly 3,000 students.

Schlage CM standalone locking products provide features found traditionally with online, networked systems. Whatever the credential used, a user-friendly software programs the locks, access trim, and offline hard-wired controllers, which manage strikes and magnets, from a laptop or PDA. New users, access points and access privileges can be entered into the system in seconds. They also provide an audit trail capability.

"We were looking for a locking system that would let us maintain a schedule of when people could enter and have control over who did enter," explains Jim Amrine, Assistant Manager of Energy and Controls at the university. "We have CM locks installed on computer labs, at the entrance to the bookstore, and in the game room."

Staff and authorized students access the locks with their campus ID cards, which contain a magnetic stripe. The locks are programmed with a handheld PDA.

Not only have the CM locks eliminated the hassle of rekeying associated with mechanical keys, but they have saved the university in other ways as well.

"We've eliminated alarms that were monitored at a central location," Amrine reports. "We just got rid of that expense and complication. The CM locks enabled us to do that."

University staff also like the audit trail capability of the CM locks. Knowing who has accessed a particular lock, and when, has helped resolve security issues on campus.

"I think that there's a sense of comfort and security with the CM locks," Amrine adds. "The people who are responsible for the areas where they are installed certainly like them."

California Baptist University officials plan to eventually transfer their existing CM locks to an older building, where hardwiring locks is not feasible, and replace the present CM locks with hardwired Schlage VIP locks. The VIP open architecture platform will let the University seamlessly connect the specially designed door lock to a panel interface board (PIB) that connects to their present Geoffrey access control system.
