New Schlage CM Safe School Lock Uses Proximity to Lock Classroom Door from Inside

Heightens Student & Faculty Safety – Minimizes Number of Credentials to Carry

FORESTVILLE, CONN. – July 16, 2003 – IR Security & Safety’s Electronic Access Control Division (EACD) today announced the availability of a new Safe School electronic locking system that provides higher security on classroom doors, maintaining student and faculty safety in case of a hostile intruder. The stand-alone, battery-operated lock includes an inside and outside HID proximity reader, which can provide greater than 80,000 uses or two to three years of battery life.

A faculty member uses an HID proximity card to access the classroom and also presents the card to lock down the classroom from the inside when endangered. When used inside, the locking system locks the classroom’s exterior lever. The teacher does not need to open the door, potentially exposing herself to harm. An inside LED display verifies that the door has been locked. New firmware includes a “Safe School Lockdown” condition and an interior pushbutton that activates the “Safe School Lockdown” condition.

“Since many schools utilize HID proximity cards for online access, this new locking system removes the necessity of having to carry multiple credentials,” reports Jeff Koziol, marketing director for “Locknetics On Board” systems. “Now, a single HID proximity card in tandem with the Schlage CM Safe School lock means the door to the classroom can be opened and locked inside or out with the same credential.”

According to Koziol, when the lock goes into “Safe School Lockdown,” all valid credentials are prevented from gaining access except for special “Pass-Thru” credentials. This ensures security in case the intruder gains possession of another faculty member’s credential. Setting the lockdown condition is accomplished in one of two ways. The teacher can present a pre-programmed “Safe School Lockdown” credential to the interior proximity card reader or present a normal valid access credential to the interior proximity card reader and depress the pushbutton within five seconds. Five slow flashes of the red LEDs validate the condition.

Opening the door or presenting the “Safe School Lockdown Cancel” credential removes the condition.

The new Safe School locking system can be computer-managed with Windows-based LockLink™ or LockLink Express software from IR Security & Safety. Programming of each lock is easily accomplished using a laptop computer or PDA. The same software will also upload and download information from other IR Security & Safety locking systems, including IR Recognition Systems biometric HandReaders. Administrators can manage up to 1000 users or provide audit trails for the last 1000 events.

A SmarTime feature allows the Schlage CM School Safe locks to be programmed to unlock at a specific time at the beginning of the school day and to lock at a specific time after dismissal. No longer do custodians or administrators need to spend time unlocking and locking classrooms.

Over 160 of the locksets have been installed at two schools in a Florida county school district since March and are performing beyond expectations of the administration.

The new Schlage Safe School locking system with proximity reader is available with 06 or 17 levers and five standard finishes. It is available now.
