Schlage Computer-Managed Locks Provide Laredo Seniors with One-Touch Access throughout Facility

Single Software Programs & Audits All Locking Systems

FORESTVILLE, CONN. - April 9, 2002 - Locknetics Security Engineering, the electronic locking systems component of IR Security & Safety's Electronic Access Control Division (EACD), today announced that the Laredo Housing Authority-Senior Citizens Home has increased security and enhanced resident convenience with a "Locknetics On Board" system. The system includes Schlage Computer-Managed (CM) locks, Locknetics magnetic locks and touchbars, and LockLink Express software.

Although the 40 year-old, 100-unit, seven-story senior citizens home had experienced no break-ins, both residents and staff were becoming more and more concerned that they weren't safe due to the number of transients in the area. When the Housing Authority began looking for a solution, they wanted to heighten security, increase resident convenience, enhance flexibility, assure architectural integrity and meet the needs of the handicapped.

"We selected Schlage stand-alone, battery-operated CM locks with "Locknetics On Board" which allow our residents to use an iButton credential to obtain entry into the new exterior gate lock, the grounds, all common areas and their rooms," explains Rodrigo Garza, director of modernization and development for the Laredo Housing Authority. "This is very convenient for the residents because they only need one credential to access all locks. Our residents simply touch the iButton fob to the iButton reader on the lock to gain entrance. Although several of our senior citizens were reluctant to use the new technology at first, once they got the hang of it, they fell in love with the system and the convenience it provides."

In addition to the iButton credentials used by the seniors, keycode pads are used on several back doors as well as the HUD offices by authorized staff. All locks, both iButton and keycode, are programmed with the same LockLink Express access control management software. A hand-held programming device is used to program and audit the individual locking devices. An interface cable attaches the hand-held programming device to the electronic locking device and, with minimal training, the Home's project manager or maintenance manager re-programs the locking system once a resident leaves.

"A nice surprise with the Schlage CM locks was that we could actually audit who has been in what room and when," adds Garza. "This is important for several reasons, not the least of which that this is a senior citizens home and it is important to keep track of the residents."

In addition to the keycode pads on the outside back doors, the inside doors feature Locknetics magnets and touchbars. They are also programmed with the same LockLink Express software.

"The system has helped us improve access after hours," affirms Garza. "Everything simply fits together. The Schlage CM locks are very easy to use and the system helps the guard have better control. They blend in with the building and are handicap accessible."
