VALENCIA, CALIF. – April 22, 2004 – "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" features a Delta Scientific bollard system in a dramatic episode of the television show to be aired Sunday, April 25, 2004 at 8 p.m. EDT/PDT on the ABC television network. The bollard system was installed to protect a home that was once destroyed when a drunken driver crashed through the front door.
A preview of the upcoming show appears on ABC's website:
"As a young mother was preparing to put her 11-week-old daughter to bed, she looked out the window and saw an SUV speeding toward the front of her parents' house, where she was living. She jumped from the room into the hallway, just as the drunk driver's speeding vehicle came crashing into the front door!
"Fortunately her child was in the back of the house with her grandmother, but the blast from the impact left pieces of the house on top of the baby and all through the now uninhabitable home. The Tugwell family from Long Beach, Calif., became displaced, but Extreme Makeover: Home Edition came to the rescue and now this family has been reunited in a newly transformed home."
Delta's bollards protect facilities from terrorists or others driving errant vehicles weighing up to 15,000 pounds and traveling at 50 mph. They are typically kept in an upright position to protect against unauthorized entry and lowered to let approved vehicles pass through. They are deployed at U.S. embassies, government facilities, nuclear power plants, universities, corporate campuses and residential areas.
"Delta's bollards are designed to complement their surroundings and that makes them ideal for residential use in applications such as in this TV program," says Scott Altizer, High Security Systems Applications Engineer at Delta. "But our bollards don't just look good. They will stop a vehicle cold in its tracks, protecting both structures and the people inside."
