VALENCIA, CALIF. - October 1, 2002 - Responsible for field engineering, installation and technical support for the leading line of counter-terrorist vehicle barrier systems in the United States and internationally, Delta Scientific’s Eastern Division staff, headquartered in Lorton, Virginia, have visited the State Department and U.S. Navy on every continent since 9-11. In the last four years, both the Eastern Division workload and staff have tripled.
Business is very different now, emphasizes Peter Lewellen, Delta Scientific-Eastern Division Manager of Operations and U.S. State Department veteran. Our division is working in all parts of the world. For instance, we just completed installation for the Navy in Washington state, Korea, Guam and the U.S. Marshall’s office in Florida. We’re continuing to install barriers, barricades and bollards at U.S. embassies and naval facilities around the globe.
We just certified the installation of 17 barricades in Guam, have barriers going into Pearl Harbor and an installation of a system in Jordan is set to start in October, 2002. We also handle all maintenance and repair at the Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa and other government agencies, installing systems at nuclear power facilities to upgrade security requirements.
According to Lewellen, two of Delta’s largest systems, the DSC501 very high security shallow foundation vehicle barricade and TT207S hydraulic barricade, have been especially popular for force protection applications at these key facilities. Both are crash-rated K12/L3, a certification widely employed by federal buildings, military bases and embassies.
The DSC501, set in a foundation only 18 inches (46 cm) deep, stops a 15,000 pound (66.7 kN) truck moving at 50 mph (80 kph), exceeding U.S. State Department requirements for its highest level of anti-terrorist vehicle barricades. The TT207S has historically been a first line of defense at embassies and other major facilities worldwide. It will stop a 20,000 pound vehicle traveling at 65 mph (88.9 kN@105 kph).
