VALENCIA, CALIF. - June 24, 2002 - To quickly protect its people, assets and facilities, the Social Security Administration headquarters in Baltimore, MD has implemented Delta's IP500 barrier to guard entrances of the ten-story Altmeyer Building from vehicle assault. Able to be deployed in high traffic locations within only a couple of hours, the Delta IP500 quick deployment barrier can be rapidly set-up on existing concrete or asphalt roads, level compacted soils and other hard surfaces. No excavation or sub-surface preparation is required. The drop arm crash beam is raised or lowered into position either hydraulically or manually.
"Since the government is being so proactive in protecting its employees and assets, waiting for a permanent barrier to be installed is unacceptable," explains David Dickinson, Delta Scientific senior vice president. "This portable barrier allows an implementation started in the morning to be completed by lunch. Installing these quick deployment barriers is a critical program of many United States government agencies and departments."
The quick deployment IP500 Barrier provides security against vehicle-based terrorism and will stop and destroy a 15,000 pound (6,800 kg) truck traveling at 30 mph (48 km/h) in less than 20 feet (6 m). The drop arm crash beam is mounted within multiple inertial pods. The unfilled pods weigh less than 700 pounds (318 kg) and are filled with concrete. Pods can be moved using a small forklift, pallet jack, crane or handcart. The portable system can be operated using any Delta hydraulic, pneumatic or manual system including fully automatic access or remote control by hardwire or RF links.
Quick deployment IP500 barriers were first used successfully by the military in Kosovo. Since then, they have been deployed at scores of other military outposts, at U.S. embassies throughout the world, including Kabul, Afghanistan, and at U.S. government agencies such as the Department of Commerce's Hoover Building.
