Delta Bollards Protect New Japanese Defense Agency Headquarters

Will Stop 7.5 Ton (66.7 Kn) Vehicles at 62 Mph (100Kph)

VALENCIA, CALIF.-July 24, 2000-Multiple Delta Scientific Model TT210 bollard systems have been installed to control the entrances and exits at the newly-opened (April 28, 2000) Japanese Defense Agency headquarters, occupying 57 acres (23 hectares) in Tokyo. The site consists of several buildings surrounding a 19-story central complex. The Delta systems were supplied to the Japanese government through Delta's long-term trading partner and exclusive Japanese distributor, Nichimen Aviation Corporation of Japan.

"Each of the systems at the Defense Agency consists of a row of bollards that use hydraulic or pneumatic power to quietly raise and lower together to control access and prevent vehicle attack, explains David Dickinson, senior vice president of Delta. "The local guard operates the system or the bollards can be controlled from a secure location within the facility. They are activated by card reader, keypad, key switch or fully automated with our digital vehicle loop detector."

At the Japanese Defense Agency, the bollards are typically deployed in the up position and lowered only to allow authorized vehicles to pass. They are tested to stop and destroy an attacking vehicle weighing 15,000 pounds moving at 62 miles per hour (66.7 Kn at 100 Kph) or a 30,000 pound vehicle moving at 44 miles per hour (133 Kn at 71 Kph).

System components consist of the bollards, hydraulic pumping units, control logic boards and control panels. They interface with the Defense Agency security system for extremely fast deployment in case of emergencies. They are impervious to severe weather conditions including heavy wind debris and sub-zero temperatures.

"We must congratulate Mr. Tomomi Matsuno, Manager of the Security Department of Nichimen Aviation Corporation, who introduced the bollard systems to the Japanese Defense Agency security professionals," Dickinson emphasizes. "He was there from start to final inspection, orchestrating the sale, technical specification, architectural coordination and supervising the installation subcontractor, NEC. Our long-term relationship has made this and other projects very successful."

Other high visibility users of Delta equipment include the United States embassies, U.S. federal courthouses, Federal Reserve Banks, Guild Hall in London, Hong Kong Police headquarters, U.S. Navy in Japan and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.
